Why the Cosumnes Is California's Last Undammed River

Almost every major river in California has been dammed somewhere along its course. The Cosumnes is the exception — it runs free from the Sierra Nevada crest all the way down to the Delta. Standing in it, you're standing in something genuinely rare.

What "undammed" actually means

A free-flowing river rises and falls with the seasons the way it always has. In spring it's high and fast with snowmelt; by late summer it settles into the warm, clear swimming holes our guests know. The rhythm is the land's, not a utility's.

That natural cycle is why the wildlife here is what it is — the osprey working the water at dawn, the salmon that still find their way up, the cottonwoods that depend on seasonal flooding.

When you camp on the Cosumnes, you're not visiting a reservoir with a beach. You're on a living river doing what rivers are supposed to do.

Why it matters for your visit

It means every season here looks different. It means the swimming is real river swimming. And it means being a good guest — packing out what you bring, respecting the water levels, and leaving the banks the way you found them so the next family, and the next osprey, gets the same river we did.

Three decades in, that stewardship is the whole job. We're just lucky it comes with this view.
